The Zoo District Company undertook the production. The narrative of "Heart of the Dog" revolves around a dog transformed into a human through scientific means, leading to problematic outcomes. This story, notable for its biting satire, was Bulgakov's first work to face a ban in the former Soviet Union.
The staging of this play was a key feature of the first international Bulgakov festival. It received support from the Mikhail Bulgakov Creative Foundation and the Kyiv State Drama Theatre on Podol. The production was made possible through a grant from the Trust for Mutual Understanding.
