Antony Sandoval's Bio:
Antony Sandoval has worked as an actor and director worldwide. His directing credits include various productions for Tadashi Suzuki's Theatre Company at the Shizuoka Performing Arts Center in Shizuoka and Toga Mura, Japan. He also directs in the United States, where he received a "Garland Award" and a “LA Weekly Award” for Best Director and a nomination for an Ovation Award again for Best Direction. His directorial work was seen at the Franko National Theatre in Kyiv, Ukraine. He opened a new adaptation of the book "Heart of the Dog" at the first International Bulgakov Festival. His production "The Tale of Mephisto" was also invited to the Gimhae Asian Performing Art Festival (GAPA) in South Korea. His acting credits include performing in Japan under the direction of renowned director Tadashi Suzuki. He has also performed throughout the USA in various Theatre festivals and has appeared on television shows and movies on many occasions. He is currently a professor at the Theatre and Dance Department at Tulane University in New Orleans. He is one of the founding members of the "International Theatre Laboratorium-USA," ITL-USA.
Antony is the founder of ITL CREATIVE, a production company established in 2014. His film adaptation of Medea, titled Medea Redux, garnered significant acclaim, including a Royal Reel Award at the 2016 Canada International Film Festival and an Award of Merit at the 2015 Accolade Global Film Competition. It was also selected for screenings at the Madrid International Film Festival, San Francisco New Concept Film Festival, and Hong Kong Pineapple Underground Film Festival. In 2021, Antony received the Best Director Award at the Monza Film Festival in Italy for this project.
Antony’s recent short film, Incarnation, earned an Honorable Mention at the 2022 Tokyo International Short Film Festival and was part of the official selection at the 2023 Toronto Indie Filmmakers Festival.
His film Strange Beast has also been well-received, achieving Honorable Mention at the 2023 Tokyo International Short Film Festival and securing semi-finalist positions in major festivals such as the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival, Vienna Indie Short Film Festival, Rotterdam Independent Film Festival, and Berlin Shorts Award. The film was also a semi-finalist at the Madrid Arthouse Film Festival and a quarter-finalist at the Vancouver International Movie Awards. Natsumi Sugiyama, the Lead Actress of Strange Beast, won Best Actress at the 2023 Summer Monte Carlo Film Awards and the Paris International Short Festival. Antony himself received awards for Best Director (Dance Film) at the Toronto Indie Filmmakers Festival, Best Cinematography at the Short Film Munich Awards, and Best Editing at the Dubai Independent Film Festival.
Currently, Antony is collaborating with the USA-based production company Moscow Nights on two major projects. The first, Oleksandra Basco’s A-Non Fictional War, which he recently completed, has already gained extensive international recognition. The film won Best Feature Experimental Film and Best Feature Director at the 2024 London Women Film Festival and Best Experimental Film at the 2024 Santa Barbara International Movie Awards. It also took home Best Experimental Film and Best Feature Director at the 2024 Los Angeles Independent Women Film Awards and Best Experimental Film at the 2024 Los Angeles Movie & Music Video Awards, where the Lead Actress also won Best Actress in an Indie Film.
The film’s trailer has garnered multiple awards, including Winner, Trailer Category at the 2024 Melbourne Independent Film Festival, Hollywood International Golden Age Festival, and Los Angeles Short Film Award. It has also been an official selection at the Hollywood Best Indie Film Awards, Los Angeles Movie & Music Video Awards, and New York Film & Cinematography Awards.
In addition to these accolades, the film was recognized as a Winner in the New Media Category at the 2024 Experimental Film Festival in Barcelona, Spain, and was an Official Selection at the 2024 Tokyo International Cinema Awards for Best Feature Experimental Film. It secured semi-finalist positions at the New York International Women Film Festival, Santa Monica International Filmmaker Awards, and the Hollywood International Golden Age Festival.
Antony’s second ongoing project, Anna Akhmatova: Sketches from a Poet’s Life, features him as the editor, head of post-production, and part of the cinematography team. This project is currently in production and is set to be a significant addition to his growing body of work.
Lastly, Antony’s short film Strange Beast has been nominated for the upcoming 2025 Planet Cinema Film Festival. The final results are expected in February 2025.
He holds an MFA in Acting from the Professional Theatre Training Program at the University of Delaware.
